My Background

When I was 12 my parents bought my first computer - a Packard Bell 386 with 2 MB of RAM. It was running MS-DOS 5.0 and I spent hours in the DOS "help" file learning to write batch scripts, modifying config.sys and autoexec.bat, and writing QBASIC games.

Once I was introduced to the Internet in 1998 I immediately began creating web pages, and eventually started a community site for teenagers (which eventually became responsible for at least three marriages).

At 17 I got my first professional programming position working with a company that provided electronic medical records for dermotology and dermatopathology laboratories.

What I Do Now

I have a broad range of experience in the information technology world - *nix system administration, network installation and maintenance, application deployment, and, of course, software development in multiple languages (I started with C and Pascal, but quickly moved on to Java and later PHP).

Services I Provide

 

I primarily serve as a web application developer. I am not a "web designer." I develop applications that apply business logic, track and analyze data, and help businesses work more efficiently. Ten years ago, the work I do would have been on the desktop. The future is the web.

I work primarily in a LAMP-stack environment, but I also have a background in Java and have dabbled in other languages (Python being a favorite). I consider myself language-agnostic and believe that the language is secondary to applying working solutions.

As a contractor, I often work with customers that have a very small IT department. These customers often rely on me to provide them with advice on software choices, implementation, project specifications, deciding on vendors, and a multitude of other tasks.
