After performing the always-iffy network upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10, everything seemed to be fine except some unsually high rendering lag from the nVidia proprietary drivers. After much tweaking of the xorg.conf file, I finally discovered the simple solution.
Navigate to System > Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager. The driver for "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver" may already be checked. Uncheck it. Close, then reboot. Upon booting, go to the Restricted Drivers Manager again and then recheck the box. It should download the necessary drivers, and then you can once again reboot.
For some reason this seemed to resolve the odd problems I was experiencing. Hopefully it will be helpful for others as well.
